Ås kyrka

Located on an old burial mound

The church has a medieval atmosphere on the outside and partly on the inside. However, there is little left of that time other than a baptismal font made of sandstone between 1150 and 1250, as evidenced by the lack of carved rope in the stone and the presence of drain holes. Part of the crucifix is from the 15th century, probably the so-called triumphal crucifix. There is also a Madonna image from the early 1400s.

**Baroque decorations

Inside, the church is mostly characterized by Baroque paintings and sculpture, which is not least noticeable in the church's exquisite ceiling paintings, so-called poor man's Bibles. The church has been rebuilt several times over the years, but as I said, the Middle Ages and Baroque characterize the church.

According to older Västgötalagen, Ås was the main seat of an administrative area called Asbo, which included Åse, Viste and Nordals härader and half of Skånings härad. Later, part of Asbo belonged to Eksholm County.

**The rune stone is walled in

In the northwest wall of the church is a rune stone. The unique thing about this stone is that it has a sister stone in Denmark with a similar inscription indicating that this Asbo died in Denmark. Next to the church there is an old beautiful arched bridge in stone
