Beskrivelse
The church was originally built by Franciscan monks, who came wandering through Sweden. The Grey Friars, as they were also called, settled in towns they thought could expand and where there were plenty of people. They were healers, helped the old and sick, and even taught children to read. Their arrival in Arboga is recorded in Assisi in Italy. According to an older, often cited view, the Grey Friars founded their convent in Arboga in 1285.
The church was completed in the early 1300s. Since then, the church has been built upon and rebuilt over the centuries. During the Reformation, the monastic brothers were driven away from Arboga, and the church fell to the city.
Many interesting objects are on display, in addition to the church itself. The wall paintings on the south side date from the 15th century and were probably painted by Magnus Håkansson. Each vault has a theme.
The brass chandeliers, which are among the largest in Sweden, are gifts to the church. The Baroque pulpit was carved by the court sculptor Buchard Precht in 1737, and the altarpiece is from the 17th century. You can also see a baptismal font from the 15th century and one from the 17th century in the church.
Next to the church there is a tin box with pilgrim passports and pilgrim stamps for those walking the St Olav Rombo Way pilgrimage trail.
