Marsliden - Marsfjällskåtan eller Marsfjällets topp

There are signs on the main road in Marsliden directing you to the parking lot and trailhead.

At first you walk through mountain spruce forest - it is well tracked and easy to walk but pretty soon it gets steeper. In the forest you can see species such as Torta, Linnea and Goldenrod. If you are lucky, you may see a three-toed woodpecker or perhaps a lichen jay joining you.

When you reach the edge of the spruce forest, you'll see a shelter on a small hill. "Apelsinklyftan" - a perfect place for a break. Here you have a wonderful view south towards Marssjön and Saxnäs with Satsfjället in the background. To the west you have a mighty cliff - Rovpentjahke - the southernmost part of the Marsfjäll massif. Feel free to sit and look for both mountain buzzards, golden eagles and kestrels - maybe you can even see a hunting falcon.

From Apelsinklyftan the hike becomes easier - first through the mountain birch forest and pretty soon you are on the bare mountain. From here you hike on rishedar towards Apelsinskalet where you have a lovely mountain environment with steep cliffs in the west. There are many nice places to stop along Ropenbäcken. Once at Apelsinskalet you get a small "mountain climb" up to the west side of the Marsfjäll massif.

Here you can choose to either go up to the top or walk towards Marsfjällskåtan. Towards Marsfjällskåtan, there are footbridges and it is quite easy to walk. You can also walk to Marsfjällskåtan via the trail that goes to the top but it will be a little longer.

The hike up to the top is demanding. If you are fit, you can do the whole stretch in one day. If you want to take more time, it is advisable to camp somewhere below the top - and climb it the next day. The last bit up to the top you walk on barren boulder fields that lack vascular vegetation and it is quite steep. But it is absolutely worth it because once at the top (if the weather is decent of course) - you get a wonderful view.

From the ridge you can look down on steep rock faces and see extensive traces of ice river activity in the form of gullies and gravel accumulations. To the east across the high mountain plateau, you can see the wonderful spruce forests all the way down to Mörrösjöliden and the Matskan area. In clear weather you should even be able to see the church tower in Latikberg. To the west, you can see the Norwegian mountain massifs on the horizon - Börgefjäll National Park, including the peaks of Sipmeke, Jetnamen, Raines and Kvigtind. Exhilarated by your experience, the hike back to Marsliden will be easy.
