Beskrivelse

Along the southwestern coast of Värmlandsnäs there are almost 200 islands, islets and skerries that together form the Millesvik archipelago.

A very large part of the islands' surface consists of rocky ground with more or less lichen growth. Lean rocky pine forest grows on many of the islands. In general, the islands of the archipelago rise insignificantly above the surface of Lake Vänern.

The reserve was established to preserve some of the archipelago's environments, primarily with regard to the scientific, but also the landscape aesthetic and cultural-historical values. The purpose is also, insofar as it does not conflict with conservation interests, to ensure public outdoor recreation. The area is part of the EU's network of valuable nature, Natura 2000.

There are a total of seven burial cairns or cairn-like rock formations within the reserve.

Animals and plants

The bird life in the area is of considerable interest. The presence of marine species is significant. Among others, graylag goose, common scoter, oystercatcher, herring gull and common tern nest in the reserve. The common guillemot nests and can be seen diving for fish on the bays. Of birds of prey, osprey and lark falcon are characteristic birds in the archipelago.

On the 60-hectare Bärön island, there are elements of rarer plants such as horsetail and musk madder. Rarer species of fungi have also been found on the island.
