Beskrivelse
Fjällbäcksbranten is a very species-rich mountainside where the bedrock consists of easily weathered greenstone. The old mixed forest is rich in various deciduous trees and there are many unusual species, mainly mosses and lichens.
The forest in and above the slope consists mainly of spruce and pine, with the oldest stands being over 200 years old. In the lower parts of the slope, and below it, deciduous trees are much more common. The deciduous trees are mainly birch, rowan and aspen, but there is also a good presence of alder, maple, elm and lime, especially in the northern part. The shrub layer is characterized by hazel and woodruff. The bedrock is basic and relatively easily weathered, which together with the locally high humidity creates good conditions for rich biodiversity, including a variety of demanding species. In the southern part, there is a relatively large and treeless boulder field below the slope.
Animals and plants
The moist and stable local climate and the great wealth of deciduous trees and loamy areas with basic bedrock create good conditions for a number of unusual organisms. Among the mosses, for example, wood bustard, rock fennel liana, golden curl moss and several species of feather moss have been found. The deciduous trees are home to exciting and spectacular lichens, such as lung lichen, beard lichen, skin lichen and pale crater lichen. The easily weathered rock also means that there is an interesting flora with species such as black magic grape, desm bud and fern.
