Södra Lunsen

The nature reserve Södra Lunsen is connected to the municipal nature reserve Norra Lunsen. In large parts, the two reserves are similar to each other with their longitudinal low mountain ridges and marshes in between. The Upplandsleden stage 1:1 trail between Uppsala and Knivsta runs through both nature reserves. When you hike through the two reserves in Lunsen, you largely walk in old sparse rocky pine forest. The pines here are often old and gnarled. There are no opportunities for the pines to grow fast when they stand on the barren mountain ridges. The fact that they stand sparsely means that the sun's rays reach the trunks, which many insects like. Between the rocky areas there are small unaffected marshes with hemlocks and water hemlocks.

In the southern parts of the reserve, the forest becomes more humid with more spruce and deciduous trees. The trees are of different ages and sizes. Some trees have already died and become deadwood. Dead wood is the habitat of many other species such as fungi, mosses and mushrooms. Therefore, it is left in the forest. Eventually, the dead wood is broken down and a new tree is allowed to grow on the site. The new tree then gets a good start with nutrients from the decomposition of the dead wood and sunlight that was left in the gap when the dead tree fell to the ground.
