Beskrivelse

BERGIAN GARDEN

After the promenade, on the part of Albano called Kräftriket, stands Alfred Nyström's statue of Carl Michael Bellman. At the end of the 18th century, Kräftriket was a tavern, which Bellman describes in Fredman's epistle no. 80. "So my nymph at Flora's party wrapped herself in a simple and varied flower, when she was invited by Mollberg to be a guest at Första Torpet, the little croft just outside the customs where the crayfish is lit red in the pan and where Brunnsviken's bay is clear in watery waves." At the same time as Bellman was writing about the tavern at Kattrumpstullen, now Roslagstull, Peter Jonas Bergius was walking in his garden at what is now S:t Eriksplan. He was a good friend of Linnaeus and donated the garden to the Academy of Sciences in return for a professorship being established in his name. In 1885, the Bergian Garden was moved to Frescati. Today, the Bergian Garden is a botanical garden open to the public, with over 7,000 species, including the giant-leaved Amazonian Victorian rose. The Bergianska also conducts research on biodiversity, especially systematic botany.
