Utsiktsplats Ryssbergen

From here, you can see Nyköping's church tower rising up and Nyköpingshus, which with its black tower hood is a landmark for Nyköping. You see the Sunlight soap factory, which is now a hotel and conference center, and Silon in the harbor, which is now a residential building. You also see farmland belonging to Stora Kungsladugården, which once supplied Nyköpingshus. The castle was built as a medieval defense fortress but was transformed into a Renaissance castle during the time of Duke Karl in the 17th century. The castle was also destroyed in the Russian fire of 1719, leaving only the King's Tower.

To the west along Skillerhultsvägen are the remains of another castle, i.e. a defense fortress from the 12th century. It is believed that the castle was built to protect the long bay, but also to defend the inlet around Skavsta.

The name Ryssbergen comes from the fact that Russian soldiers gathered here before burning down Nyköping in 1719. That year, the Russians ravaged the entire east coast. Almost everything except Alla Helgona church, Västra Klockstapeln and some small houses were destroyed.
