Beskrivelse

The Tynnelsö Djurgård nature reserve is located on the southern part of the island. Historical maps show that the farm has been managed with grazing or haymaking for several hundred years. Some parts of the area have developed into deciduous forest with a lot of dead wood. Other parts of the reserve are still pastures where wide-crowned oaks are allowed to spread. The pastures are kept open with the help of sheep.

Many types of lichens, mosses and fungi grow on the old, large oaks. Several of these species are on the red list of endangered species. Dutch elm disease has taken its toll on the island's elms, and today many "tree skeletons" remain in the pasture.
