Beskrivelse
Gripsholm's deer park is beautifully situated along Lake Mälaren, a short walk from Gripsholm Castle. There are just over a thousand trees here, classified as worthy of special protection. There are also about a hundred fallow deer grazing in the garden.
The reserve has a long history as a pasture and park. As early as the 17th century, the area was pasture, belonging to Gripsholm's Kungsladugård. In the 1860s, the park was laid out by King Karl XV as a combination of walking park and animal farm. A few decades later, the deer park itself was built.
Hjorthagen is a popular walking area for both local residents and visitors to Gripsholm Castle and picturesque Mariefred in general. The roads in the area are suitable for walking, wheelchairs and prams. There are some hills, but otherwise the area is not hilly.
There are picnic tables and benches in the area, so please bring a packed lunch or picnic basket. The nearest toilet is at the parking lot of Gripsholm Castle (open during the castle's opening hours).
Remember to keep your dog on a leash when you are in the reserve, all year round.
In Sweden there are over 5,000 nature reserves and over 4,000 different Natura 2000 areas. Some of these are both nature reserves and Natura 2000 areas.
