Bjersjöholms ädellövskog, Naturreservat

Bjersjöholm Nature Reserve is a lush island surrounded by a vast agricultural landscape. Trees have grown here for a very long time. This means that the area qualifies as one of the ten forest areas in Skåne with the most valuable insect fauna.

Home to many red-listed species

The beech forest redstart is one of the threatened beetle species that live in the reserve. It belongs to the weevil family and lives its first four years as a larva in decaying beech wood. It is called the red skirt because of its red cover wings. The beech redstart is found in the forest along with over 75 other red-listed, threatened species.

These are mainly rare insects, fungi and lichens associated with deciduous forest environments. Among the rare species of fungi found in the reserve are coral tick, grove tick, ox tongue fungus and coral tag fungus.

Difficult to access nature reserve with tree giants

The nature reserve is not easy to get around in. Here, dead trees lie criss-crossed among bushes and growing trees. But keep an eye out for the tree giants. There are around seventy large, thick beech and oak trees that are over 250 years old. The wood pigeon nests in hollows in the old trees.

You are welcome to explore the forest on foot, but there are currently no marked paths.

Welcome to Bjersjöholm hardwood forest Nature Reserve

It lies like a verdant island, surrounded by an extensive agricultural landscape. Forest has grown here over a very long period. This is why the area merits a place on the top ten list of forests with a valuable insect fauna in Skåne.

The red-horned cardinal click beetle (Ampedus rufipennis) is one of the endangered beetle species in the reserve. This member of the click beetle family spends the first four years of its life as a larva in rotten beech wood. It has cardinal-red wing cases. The beetle exists together with more than 75 other red-listed, threatened species. They are mainly insects, fungi and lichens that are linked to forest environments with broad-leaved deciduous trees.

The nature reserve does not offer easy walking. Dead trees are found criss-cross among shrubs and growing trees. But look out for the tree giants. There are some 70 large, wide beeches and oaks that are more than 250 years old. Stock dove nests in hollows in the old trees.

You are welcome to experience the forest on foot, but there are currently no marked trails.
