Gäddöskogens naturreservat

Gäddö has old-growth forest and bogs. An unusually large number of large pine trees remain from previous generations. The oldest trees began to grow as early as the 1770s. Since then, the pines have stood here through storms and cultivation and, together with ancient stumps, are relics of the past.

The area's old pines are a particular attraction, and there are a number of very large and tall ones in the middle of the reserve. Another place worth seeing is the border cairn "Örbergsstaven" in the far east. The cairn is of great age and marks the border between the parishes of Regna, Skedevi and Risinge. The stone pile is large and is clearly visible on an open hillside.

Gäddöskogen is located on the edge of the Kolmård terrain. The landscape is fairly flat and undramatic, but still varied with blocky heights and winding swamp forests. The old-growth forest contains trees of all ages and sizes. Parts of the forest have been affected by spruce bark beetle infestation. Spruce trees are gradually falling, leaving room for light-favored trees, including pine.

The reserve contains large areas of fine swamp forests and bog edges. Some typical species that prefer this environment are the orchids spiderwort and coralroot. Orchids are often thought of as having colorful flowers that attract attention, but this is not the case with these two. Both species have small and rather inconspicuous flowers that require close study to reveal their beauty.

For you as a visitor

In Gäddöskogen there are no signs, parking or other facilities for you as a visitor. But you are welcome to visit the area at your own pace. The Östgötaleden trail between Rejmyre and Regna passes by the reserve.

The nature reserve and its facilities are managed by the County Administrative Board of Östergötland.
