Beskrivelse
Naulajärvi-Kirvesvuoma is an expansive wetland that resembles a sea of marshland, interrupted by forested islets. Here, both the curlew, our largest wader, and the forest dweller, the three-toed woodpecker, thrive. The wetland's diversity includes aapa mires, string-flark mires, and stream meadows, creating a unique and largely undisturbed environment for a rich array of flora and fauna. Trails in the central part of the reserve allow visitors to experience this fascinating nature.
The forests on the islets have escaped modern forestry and are home to ancient spruces from the 18th and 19th centuries. Rare fungi such as the cream bracket and cheese polypore can also be found, along with traces of human activity, such as pitfall traps and remnants of hay racks.
Naulajärvi-Kirvesvuoma is also vital grazing land for the Gällivare Sámi village, which uses the area for calving and as a resting ground for reindeer.
