• Never be alone on the ice
• Always carry ice studs and other safety equipment on the ice
• Always test the ice with an ice spike if you are unsure
• Never walk on ice if you are not sure it will hold. Core ice should be at least 10 cm thick
• Keep in mind that new ice, spring ice, snow-covered ice and sea ice can be weak
• Learn where the weak points of the ice are; reeds, rocks, bridge, headland, drain, outlet, inlet, strait, shoal and windbreak
• The more speed you have, the further out you can get on weak ice before it breaks and the more difficult the rescue will be
• Always have something between you and the person in need, the "extended arm"
• Always communicate where you are going and when you intend to return
