Gammalsby lakelands are exclusive land. Few other places in Europe have such large, continuous lake areas as Öland. The grazed grasslands and shallow shores are perfect environments for both nesting and resting birds. No wonder Gammalsby lakelands are well visited by birdwatchers!
Wader families
Every year, a variety of wading birds raise their young in the reserve. On the shallow clay and sandy bottoms, the birds feed on mussels, shells and other small animals. In the damp grasslands, they find insects, spiders, earthworms and other bugs. But if it weren't for the grazing animals, nesting would be sparse. For some waders, only the shortest grass is good enough, while others build their nests in taller grass. The waders are usually very vulnerable to nest predators. This is why the island of Gammalsbyören is a particularly popular nesting site. No foxes or other four-footed predators come here. And there are no vantage points for crows and other nesting birds because the island has no trees or bushes.
Resting guests
The shallow, sheltered beaches and pastures of the salt marshes are perfect resting places. In spring, migratory birds usually pass unnoticed in the sky, unless they are forced down by cold low pressure and north-easterly winds. But when they return from their breeding grounds in the north, they stop to replenish their fat reserves before continuing their journey south. The peak season for birdwatchers is therefore from summer to early fall, when waders and geese can be seen in abundance.
Visitor information
A footpath runs through the no-entry area and is accessible all year round. Toilet and bathing area at Seby at the northern end of the reserve.
Two viewing platforms are located in the area.

The area is easily accessible with Seby location in the north and Gräsgårdshamn in the south. There are parking lots on both sides.
Forskrifter
In the nature reserve you are not allowed:
- During April 1 - July 31, you are not allowed to be in the areas or trails marked on the map, which you can see further down the page or on site in the reserve.
- Park a motor vehicle, caravan or trailer.
- Moor or anchor a boat for more than 24 hours in the same place.
- Drive or land a hovercraft, hydrocopter, low-flying aircraft or similar craft.
- Driving or landing a low-flying aircraft.
- Camping for more than 24 hours in the same place.
- Deliberately disturbing wildlife.
- Bringing a dog or other animal that is not on a leash.
- Making a fire.
- Digging or pulling up vascular plants.
If you have received permission from the County Administrative Board, you may:
- Use the area for competitions or exercises.
- Put up a board, sign, poster or similar device or make inscriptions.
- Carry out commercial activities.
After consultation with the County Administrative Board, you may:
- Conduct survey or research.
Full regulations
C. Regulations according to Chapter 7, Section 30 of the Environmental Code on the right to travel and stay in the reserve and on order in general.
It is forbidden to enter the reserve:
- enter or travel within the area marked on the attached decision map, Appendix 1 during the period April 1 through July 31 (except on specially marked paths).
- set up a motor vehicle, caravan or trailer
- moor or anchor a boat for more than one day in the same place
- operate a hovercraft, hydrocopter, jet ski or similar craft
- camping for more than one day in the same place
- flying low-flying aircraft or landing with aircraft
- deliberately disturbing wildlife
- Bringing an unleashed dog or other loose pet.
- Setting a fire.
- Digging or pulling up vascular plants.
It is also forbidden without the permission of the County Administrative Board:
- use the area for competition or practice purposes
- put up a board, sign, poster, poster, art object or similar device or make an inscription
- Granting or using the area for commercial use of the right of public access.
In addition, it is prohibited to without consultation with the County Administrative Board:
- carry out collection, investigation or research.
