Vålådalen

Vålådalen is without doubt the best known and most visited mountain area in the county. Magnificent mountain views are available to almost everyone. If you don't want to drag your tent and sleeping bag with you, there are several cabins within easy day-trip distance, both inside and outside the reserve itself.

Zoning of outdoor activities

To make it easier for you to find the experience you want, the area is divided into zones with varying degrees of organization. Each zone also has rules about where, when and sometimes how you can practice different activities. The rules are based both on consideration for reindeer and other sensitive wildlife, and on other conditions in nature at different times of the year. In some areas, there are shelters, outhouses and fireplaces at a convenient distance from roads and services, and there are well-signposted trails with paths and bridges. In other areas - in fact, most of the nature reserve - nature takes precedence and there are no such facilities at all.

In addition to the zoning, there are restriction areas where there are stricter regulations. In two places in the reserve, there is a trespassing ban, i.e. you are not allowed to stay there at all, and in four places you are not allowed to camp, stay overnight in shelters or similar.

When you are already in the area, you can easily find out what the rules are where you are using an interactive map tool. Using a mobile phone, tablet or computer, you can go in and 'tap' the screen to get information quickly. Note that mobile coverage is poor in some places, so it is always good to check in advance.

E-biking on reindeer grazing mountains is not allowed

The right of public access is non-motorized, which means that electric bikes are not allowed in nature without the landowner's permission. This applies regardless of the bike's power in kW.

On state land within reindeer grazing mountains (see maps below), the County Administrative Board represents the landowner. For the reindeer grazing mountains, the County Administrative Board has introduced a policy whereby e-biking is not permitted as a general rule. However, e-biking on state land in the reindeer grazing mountains may be permitted in exceptional cases after special consideration by the County Administrative Board. The policy has been introduced in order to protect non-motorized outdoor recreation, which is subject to the right of public access, over motorized outdoor recreation.
