Beskrivelse

Södra Sutarebo is located between the two reserves Sutarebo and Sundsholm and connects the two areas. The area consists mainly of mixed deciduous forests and streams with an unusual bottom fauna. The area, together with the reserves to the north and south, is located on a western slope down towards Lake Gyltige. The surroundings consist of spruce plantations and a small-scale agricultural landscape.

Södra Sutarebo is located in Simlångsdalen along the eastern side of the valley next to Lake Gyltigesjön. The landscape is moderately sloping closest to the lake but rises steeply in the east, with a rise from the lake's 65 meters above sea level to levels around 175 meters above sea level at Örnås east of the reserve.

Steep slopes, mountains and deep gorge-like rift valleys

In the western part of the reserve, the soil consists of glacial river sediment, while on the steep slopes in the east it consists of moraine deposits. In the southern and northern parts, it changes to steep mountains and deep ravine-like rift valleys. Here and there, rocky outcrops and cliffs break out into impressive views across the valley to the west, and in several places there are mighty cliffs with large boulders.

Many flowing streams

Within the area, four streams flow to Lake Gyltige. All streams are small (usually 0.3-1 meters wide) and with many natural obstacles in the form of blocks, stones and branches. They are largely flowing and have many small falls. In a few places, the terrain flattens out and the streams widen, creating areas of swamp forest to return downstream to narrow forest streams. Rocks, boulders, gravel and sand are the dominant bottom substrate. There are valuable gravel beds in many places. All streams have many migration barriers for fish, most of which are natural. The last part of the streams down to the lake is culverted in several cases, and in two places ponds have been dug in the streams. The fine parts of the streams contain unusual bottom fauna and at least two of the streams contain red-listed caddisflies.

Accessibility in the reserve

If you want to go for a walk in the reserve, it is easiest to stick to the forest roads that are available. Otherwise, it can be quite hilly and a bit tricky. There are no direct paths to get around in the reserve.
