Lugnarohögen

UNIQUE BRONZE AGE GRAVE IN HASSLÖV

Lugnarohögen in Hasslöv is a burial mound from the Late Bronze Age (around 800-600 BC) that became a minor sensation when it was excavated in 1926. The grave was found to contain a stone in the shape of a ship, which was the first of its kind in Sweden. A quick decision was made to preserve this discovery for posterity; a dome was cast over the ship and an underground passage was built from the adjacent cottage. Lugnarohögen then became a popular destination for schools, archaeologists and tourists interested in history. Inside the cabin there is a basic exhibition with information about the excavation and the Bronze Age. Lugnarohögen is one of two graves in Sweden that the public can visit - the other is Kungagraven in Kivik.

After extensive renovation, Lugnarohögen was reopened in summer 2020.

THE GRAVE FOUNDATION

Burnt human bones were found in a ceramic pot and three small bronze objects: an awl, tweezers and a dagger. Bone remains were also found outside the pot. Further up the burial mound, two so-called secondary burials were also discovered, buried at later times.

Lugnarohögen is located in Hasslöv in the southern part of Laholm municipality. The address is Lugnarovägen 2, 312 97 Laholm. GPS coordinates: 56.412125, 13.009183.

Parking is available in connection to Lugnarohögen. There are also parking facilities at Hasslövs Hembygdsgård which is a stone's throw away. Parking is free of charge.

Please note that Lugnarohögen has no toilet due to the lack of water and sewerage.

ACCESSIBILITY

Please note that Lugnarohögen, due to its cultural-historical protection classification, is unfortunately not accessible. There are stairs, thresholds and narrow spaces. The outdoor environment consists of grassy areas and a small hill, but is otherwise accessible. Please contact Laholm's tourist office on 0430-154 50 for more information.
