Beskrivelse
Hejnum hällar is one of Gotland's largest rocky areas. The nature reserve is only a small part of the entire rocky area, but the idea is that the reserve will be larger in the future.
Hejnum hällar, at 65 meters above sea level, is one of the highest points on Gotland and one of the areas that lay above the water surface after the ice sheet had melted away. This means that species have had plenty of time to establish themselves in the area. The large complex of outcrops connects in the west to the cultivated Hejnumdalen valley and in the east to the large wetland area Hejnum Kallgate. Along the eastern edge there are powerful glacial river valleys eroded by the sea during land uplift.
Hejnum hällar is a mosaic of barren alvar fields, bare limestone outcrops and patchy, grazed pine forests. Animals have grazed here since time immemorial and lambs still graze here today. This keeps the land open, which means that many rare plants and butterflies thrive. You can see the beautiful Apollo butterfly flying over the rocks on hot summer days in July.
Hejnum hällar has a network of roads, paths and cycle tracks for those who want to explore the area. Here you can hike far in the original Gotland nature.
