Beskrivelse

At Limön's highest point, just over 20 meters above sea level, stands the old lighthouse that was put into use in 1902.

The lighthouse was built by the city of Gävle as compensation to the state for the gravel that was loaded from Limön for the construction of the harbor at Fredriksskans in Gävle.

In the early 1900s, the lighthouse was also used as a school and teacher's residence. In 1980, the light in the old lighthouse was extinguished and replaced by a newer steel structure. It too has now been decommissioned and replaced by two beacons on the eastern part of the island.

It is likely that this site was used long before to guide sea traffic safely towards Gävle. The earliest aids were so-called beacons, fires suspended from poles in high places. Old maps also indicate that Limön was the site of spring barracks. These were lit when necessary to warn the population along the coast of approaching dangers, such as attacks by enemy forces.

Between 1822 and 1911 there was a pilot station on Limön. It was closed down when land uplift made it difficult for pilots to get back to Limön in stormy weather. The pilot house was then moved to the Bönan pilot station where it remains today.
