Beskrivelse
Smörtjärnarna has an exciting nature and history. There are remains of mining activities and a calcareous bedrock that provides a different vegetation. There are several small mine holes and a dug mining ditch from 1883 to secure the water supply in the mines in Tuna-Hästberg.
The coniferous forest in the reserve is old and valuable. There are dry areas with pine forests with old pines and spruce slopes with rough forest. The forest is a good environment for many demanding species, such as capercaillie, three-toed woodpecker, cat-footed lichen, old spruce lichen and rare spider mites.
The calcareous bedrock leaves its mark on the vegetation. The area is home to bluebells and a number of unusual fungi with euphonious names, such as copper spider mite and porcelain blue spider mite. The iron ore in the ground, or perhaps the mountain's protests against old mining, means that you cannot fully trust the compass in this reserve.
