Mossgräsberget

Mossgräsberget's nature reserve is dominated by a large foliage burn, that is, a deciduous forest that has come up after forest fire. The deciduous burn is the core of a whole area that burned off at a big fire in the late 19th century. Now the deciduous forest shines in the eyes as you look west over Ågsjön from the road between Åg and Vintjärn. Once inside the forest, aspen and high-stemmed birch dominate, often attacked by explosive peaks. The soil is more nutritious than is usual in old deciduous burns. Night violet is one of the nature plants and the smaller flycatcher here has its safest room in Dalarna. In addition to deciduous forest, mixed forest, pure spruce stocks and in northern lean pine fields are included. The deciduous burn was previously affected by the forest work of the cows from Åg's garden, an agriculture where the fields were fought by 1954.

In June 2011, the County Administrative Board carried out a nature conservation burning. An approximately ten hectare area in the reserve's northern parts was burned. The woods that were burned were pine forests with a certain element of deciduous trees, but also an increasing proportion of spruce. The purpose of the burning was to reintroduce the fire as a natural disturbance in the forest. The burning was successful and the result was that most of the fir trees died while most of the pines survived. The dead trees quickly become breeding grounds for fire-protected insects whose larvae, in turn, feed on the area's woodpeckers.
