Kyrkbytjärn

Few places in Falun can provide an equally eventful nature experience as Kyrkbytjärn one morning in May. Over the tarn, the laughing gulls fly back and forth with cotton material in their beak. In the pond, some gluttons snag on the way to the northern nesting moors. Above the leafwax, the brown swamp mound flies at the same time as the pipe dream cries its sleepy bottle blows well hidden in the reed blades.

Kyrkbytjärn is Falun's finest bird lake. Many bird species nest in the pond or the surrounding fields and for birds that pass on spring and autumn migration, Kyrkbytjärn is an important resting place. What makes the pond so interesting for the birds is that it is basic and nutritious. It produces a high production of aquatic plants, seeds and aquatic animals that provide food for the birds. The pond's mosaic of open water surfaces, large reeds and meadows creates a varied environment for breeding, feeding and resting for many different birds. In some of the fields around the pond grazing animals go. They keep the land open and their bait and tramp far out in the water creates shallow and protected water mirrors that many birds enjoy.

For those who just want to enjoy the nature around the pond, there is an approximately three-kilometer long footpath. It is marked with signs showing a flying harrier. Along the trail there is a bird tower and a platform with good views. On the west side there is a log cabin with fireplace and on the east there are picnic areas at the barn. At the far south lies the tall clad Gramsängs headland. Åsen, which is a nature reserve, is a beautiful rest area with good views of the pond.
