Description

From church village to central town in the sixth phase of Strömsholm Canal

Along this stage you paddle between the Västmanland mill town of Ramnäs to the historic and beautiful Surahammar. Like several of the other stages, this stage also offers beautiful nature and fascinating cultural environments. Shortly after leaving Ramnäs, you pass the Gnien nature reserve, which is a popular place for birdwatching. Further down at Magsjön you pass Surhammars Campingbad which is a nice stop for both coffee, lunch and possible overnight stay. Once in Surahammar there is much to experience and see. The area next to the canal in Surahammar is filled with well-preserved cultural environments so a stop here is a must. The entire stage is only 9 km long and takes no more than 4 hours.

Along the stage there are no lifts until you reach the lock at Surahammar. Here you can choose to end your tour or continue along the next stage of the Strömsholm Canal towards Hallstahammar. To end up on your way to Surahammar, keep right at the watershed before you reach the town. The left waterway leads to a power plant that you should watch out for.

Facts

Facts

Strömsholm Canal is one of Sweden's longest canals and follows the Kolbäcksån river from Smedjebacken in the north to Borgåsund in the south where it flows into Lake Mälaren. The canal was commissioned in 1795 with the aim of meeting the transportation needs of the mining industry. During its approximately 10-mile journey, the canal passes through several Westmanland mill towns that in the old days produced the products that helped build Sweden's prosperity. Paddling tours in Strömsholm's canal offer fascinating history, beautiful nature and lovely cafes and restaurants. The entire canal can be paddled during one multi-day trip with stops at nice accommodations along the way, or can be covered with several day trips during a summer.
