Description
Welcome to a lush green place in the middle of a flat field landscape. Here you will find old, coarse oaks, many different flowers and a teeming life of insects. You can also see the foundations of a defense facility that existed here in the Middle Ages.
Hidden beneath the overgrown hills are stones, bricks and earthworks that remain from the medieval defense site. Construction began in the 14th century, but it is unclear whether it was ever used. At that time, Slottsholmen was an island in the Arboga River. In the 16th century, a brick building was built on top of the stone foundation. Despite the name, there has never been a castle here, but the site has been used for guarding or defense.
If you come here in the spring, you can enjoy the bluebells, nunwort, spring peas and yellow carpets of flowering spring onions. On the slopes, you can also see almond blossom, maidenhair fern and wild onion in bloom. Here you may see the occasional cow grazing to keep the landscape open. If you want to sit and have a coffee, there is a picnic area with a shelter just outside the nature reserve by the Arbogaån river. Otherwise, it is cozy to put your picnic blanket under the rough oaks.

You can get to Slottsholmen on foot, by bike or by boat. Turn west at the gas station in the southwest part of Kungsör. From here it is 400 meters to a nature reserve called Sandskogsbacken. If you continue 1 kilometer on the road through the reserve and across the fields, you will arrive at Slottsholmen. If you have a car, you can park when you arrive at the Sandskogsbacken nature reserve. There is no parking and it is forbidden to drive motor vehicles through the nature reserve.
