Description

South Munktorp.

Starting from Köping, Östanåsgatan towards Ållesta and Västersörby. Cross road 558, up on the viaduct turn right towards Ullvi. Take it carefully it can be busy. Now begins the narrow winding roads that are easy to cycle, some uphill followed by a downhill. Fertile landscape with hay meadows and occasionally glimpses of Lake Mälaren. Ullvi, Dåvö, Ekeby, Sörsylta and Norrsylta are places passed on the tour. If it is seasonal, you may be able to buy a locally produced honey jar along the way. Dåwö manor, as early as 1275 King Magnus Birgersson (Ladulås) stayed at Dåwö farm, which he gave as a gift to Queen Hedvig the following year. In 1326, the dowager duchess Ingeborg took over, the story then continues with sugar mill owners, mill patrons and agronomists who have continued the manor's activities and continue to do so today.

The tour continues towards Munktorp, take aim at the church tower! The oldest part is David's church from the 11th century, then the church has been added to over the centuries. The monk David came from England to Christianize the people and is today the patron saint of Västmanland. One of Europe's longest pilgrimage routes, the Romboleden, begins here at the church.

Northern Munktorp

From the church we partly follow the Mälardalsleden towards Skästa, Vallby and Häljesta. Behind the barn in Häljesta is Västmanland's largest rock carving from the Bronze Age (1500-400 BC), with almost 500 figures such as ships, people, animal figures and bowl pits. The gravel road leads us down towards Norrtuna and we follow the road over Kastenabacken back towards Köping and are back on Östanåsgatan where we started.

Detour on the southern part: Take a right at Dåvö farm then straight ahead on the gravel road and you will come to Krutholmen's rocky outcrops at Sandviken, perhaps to enjoy a picnic to the waves of Lake Mälaren. Towards Broholmen is Billingen Nature Reserve, part of the larger Strömsholm Nature Reserve. There is a nice walking trail and a lookout tower for birdwatching. Or head towards Strömsholm for a visit to the castle and enjoy the beautiful surroundings with the canal and the oak gardens. Several food and coffee places are available. Detour on the northern part, at Häljeby, continue towards Morgendal on the other side of the E18, to the ancient castle Visberget. Signposted right. A smaller ancient castle with wooden walkways over the ring wall.
