Description
This scenic stage takes you right through the heart of Skuleskogen National Park. You'll hike through old-growth forest, pass dramatic heights and have the opportunity to make detours to viewpoints located west of the famous Slåttdalsskrevan - a place that is no longer recommended to pass through due to the risk of landslides. In the park you can only camp in designated campsites, but there are also simple overnight cabins. At the North entrance there is parking and signage further towards Näske.
The High Coast Trail passes right through Skuleskogen National Park on this stage, from Entrance South to Entrance North. Over the millennia, Skuleskogen has quietly risen from the sea. The result is a stunningly dramatic mix of old-growth forest, magical forest lakes, roaring sea, deep crevices, high mountain ridges and miles of views. In short: Skuleskogen leaves no one untouched!
The stage offers a relatively demanding hike with large differences in altitude. Inside the park, there is a system of marked hiking trails of over 25 km that connect in various ways to the High Coast Trail. Here you can hike for several days without seeing either roads or power lines that disturb the experience of untouched nature.
At Entré Syd, the southern entrance to Skuleskogen National Park, you have magnificent views of the Bothnian Sea. There are plenty of parking spaces and good information about Skuleskogen National Park. There is also weather-protected seating, benches and tables, and a dry toilet. Entré Syd does not offer any form of accommodation, but you are recommended to hike further into the national park and use the overnight cabins available there. Inside the national park, you can only camp in specially designated campsites, otherwise camping is not allowed. For more information on where the campsites are located, see the maps. A good map with a description of the national park is also available at Naturum Höga Kusten.
Just under a kilometer into the national park is Kälsviken, a large and lovely sandy beach. There are two shelters, fireplaces with wood and dry toilets. Camping is also permitted here. Fresh water can be taken from the streams on the north side of the bay, about 400 meters from the shelter.
One of Skuleskogen's major attractions is Slåttdalsskrevan, which is located in the middle of the stage. The crevice is about 210 meters long, 7 meters wide and 40 meters deep with vertical walls.
Further along the trail is Tärnättvattnen, two lakes separated by a bog. Between the lakes there is an overnight cabin open to hikers with four bunks and a stove. There is also a dry toilet and a fireplace.
Cabins available for hikers alongside the trail:
- Näskebodarna: Fäbodvall with private cabins. About a hundred meters south of the embankment there is an overnight cabin for hikers with four beds, stove and dry toilet. Camping is allowed. Water is taken from the stream.
- Tärnättholmarna: A spacious cabin with six beds, a stove, a dry toilet, a fireplace and benches and tables. Camping is allowed. Water can be taken from a stream on the mainland about 400 meters northwest of the cabin. On the outer islet there is a simple picnic hut with a stove and dry toilet.
- At Tärnättsundet on the mainland there is a cabin with four beds and a stove. Water can be taken from the stream.
At Entré Nord, there are benches, tables, a dry toilet, a fireplace, a litter bin and an information board about the national park. For further information and a comprehensive map of Skuleskogen National Park, contact Naturum Höga Kusten. Brochures are available from May to October at Entrance South, North and West.
