Description

The small chapel with beautiful views towards Överuman.

DESCRIPTION.

The current chapel is a new building from 1983. At Vilasundet, on a now-dammed site 1 km south of the present chapel, a priest from Norway built a chapel for the Sami in 1723. The north-western part of Tärna was counted as Norwegian land until the border was drawn in 1751. The chapel was very simple. Built of small birch and with a turf roof about 4 meters square. After the land became Swedish and Tärnas chapel, at Gamla Kyrknäset outside present-day Tärnaby, was built in 1762, the lonely Vila chapel was abandoned. For many years afterwards, the chapel was used as a net shed by fishing Sami.

The current chapel, whose main supporter was the provost Victor Svedberg, was consecrated on July 2, 1983 by Bishop Olaus Brännström.
