Description
Rörträsk's silage meadows consist of over-silted meadows that show how farming and cattle breeding in Norrland's hinterland could look like in the latter part of the 19th century.
In Rörträsk, the volume of cattle fodder harvested was increased by artificially irrigating the natural meadows along the Petikån river. The water was led in a long ditch from an adjacent stream to the hay meadows. The supply of water from the stream was regulated by small floodgates that were opened after the spring flood and closed a few weeks before haymaking.
The facility in Rörträsk is unique as it is today the only example of a functioning silt meadow in Västerbotten. Rörträsk's herring meadows were established as a cultural reserve in 2002 and are the county's first cultural reserve.
