Description
In 1762, the first Swedish church building in the area was erected here. Before that, there was a chapel at Strimasund, which then belonged to Norway.According to legend, Tärna church was originally to be built at Tärnasjön, Sami Derrnajaure, 20 km to the north. But as no suitable timber grew there, the church was built in the last spruce forest at Gäutajaure instead. The completed church was then not moved up to Lake Tärnasjön for the winter, as originally planned, but remained at the building site. The name Tärna thus came to be associated with the church site at Gäutajaure.A restored chapel at Gamla Kyrknäset burned down in 1986 but has now been rebuilt.
