Description
The undisturbed location and the mosaic of old forest and vast marshes give Martatjärnsskogen its wilderness character.
Martatjärnsskogen is located on the high ground above the Klarälven valley and consists of a flat area with a forest and mire mosaic and smaller lakes that give the reserve its name.
The forest is dominated by old pine forest, but there are also elements of spruce forest and mixed coniferous forest.
The trees are about 200 years old, with some even older pines. There are plenty of trees with so-called armored bark, flat crown and curved hanging branches. The area is characterized by forest fires that created the old pine forests and fire stumps that are important and rare structures in today's forest landscape.
The area, together with the adjacent nature reserve, is attractive to visitors seeking nature experiences in the form of natural forest and vast marshes in a beautiful and undisturbed environment.
A large number of threatened species have been found in the reserve and in many places the trees are draped with long tufts of twine lichen.
Before your visit
There are no facilities such as parking or rest areas in the area. You are welcome to walk around on your own.
The nearest parking lot is at Vimyrens nature reserve, just south of Martatjärnsskogen.

Directions
Värmlands län, Torsby municipality, about one mile south of Stöllet. From Ekshärad: Take road 239 towards Torsby from Ekshärad. At Knappåsen turn right and head north past the Segenässätern and Nordtorpsätern turn-offs. After about 12 kilometers you will reach the southern border of the reserve. From Torsby: Drive the E45 north. After about 30 kilometers turn right onto Knappåsvägen. After about 7 kilometers you reach the northern border of the reserve. Parking is available at Vimyrens nature reserve. The road is closed during the thaw.
Regulations
In addition to other statutory provisions, it is prohibited in the reserve to
- felling or otherwise damaging living or dead trees or bushes, standing or fallen
- collect invertebrates, mosses, lichens and wood fungi
- driving a motorized vehicle
- tipping or stockpiling
- digging or pulling up vascular plants
- damaging, rearranging or removing rock, earth or stone.
Exceptions
The prohibition on driving motorized vehicles does not apply on existing roads.
