Description
The nature reserve was established to protect the deciduous islands and steep coniferous forest slopes in the eastern part of Lake Värmeln. The nature values are linked to the high proportion of deciduous trees on the islands, old pine trees, and the presence of buildings with local history.
On one of the islands, Krokstadön, there are buildings with local history. The nature reserve is located in both Arvika and Kil municipalities and also borders Grum municipality.
Most of the 929.1 hectares of the reserve is water and 211.5 hectares of the area is woodland.
Animals and plants
The area has long been known for its beautiful nature and high nature values. The natural values are linked to the high proportion of deciduous trees on the islands, which are important for many species such as wood pigeons and various insects as well as lichens, mosses and fungi. There are also old pine trees that are important for nesting birds and insects such as the longhorn beetle and the relict beetle.

The reserve is located in Värmlands län, Kil and Arvika municipality, 5.5 kilometers west of Högboda. A boat is required to visit the islands in the reserve. The part of the reserve that is on land can be reached by car, but the last part of the road is of a low standard and can therefore be difficult to access with an ordinary car.
Regulations
It is prohibited to:
- collect or harm invertebrates, such as beetles, snails/molluscs and butterflies
- collect mosses, lichens and wood fungi
- felling or otherwise damaging living or dead trees, standing and fallen trees, and bushes
- drive motorized vehicles, such as tractors, snowmobiles and all-terrain vehicles (quad bikes)
- make fires on the islands other than in designated areas
- use the area in an organized manner for commercial purposes without the permission of the county administrative board, and for schools and institutions to regularly use the area to carry out scientific or other studies.

Mångsidigt naturreservat med många fina platser. På fastlandet finns i sydöstra delen av reservatet två porlande vårbäckar med blommande kabbeleka. I nordöstra delen, öster om Hurttjärnet, finns en utsiktsplats kapabel att leverera praktfulla solnedgångsvyer över Värmeln. Dessutom finns här en udda konstinstallation (mer än så avslöjar jag inte). Bered dig dock på ca 2½ km vandring längs grusväg från närmsta lagliga plats att ställa bilen på. Huvudattraktionen i naturreservatet är givetvis de många trevliga öarna, som bildar en fin liten skärgård för kanotpaddlare. Landstigningsmöjligheterna kan bitvis vara begränsade längs de steniga och kuperade stränderna, men vid sydöstra änden av Granön och vid en liten udde på sydöstra sidan av Krokstadön finns mycket små sandstränder med tillhörande eldstad och mark som är platt nog att tälta på. Lämpliga tältplatser finns även på sydvästra sidan av Adelsön samt på sydspetsen av St. Vidholmen, men här består stranden av klipphällar. På Granön kan man beskåda plockepinn i bauta-format, skapat av allt för ivriga bävrar. På Enträsholmen häckar år 2023 fiskgjuse i en trädtopp, håll respektfullt avstånd! Med lite friluftsfrämjande insatser, som tydligare skyltning, bättre parkeringsmöjligheter, en mer officiell kanotiläggningsplats och kanske någon enkel vandringsstig på någon av öarna, hade det nog kunnat bli toppbetyg. Vill man vara en drömmare så skulle också en upprustning av det gamla sommarhemmet på Krokstadön kunna ge en fin möjlighet till ekoturism. Kanske något för den händige?
