For visitors

Högbergsfältet is a popular destination all year round, and especially in summer. Therefore, remember to follow the rules that apply, so it will be a pleasant stay for everyone.

Some days there are a lot of cars at the northern parking lot. Then drive a few hundred meters south and there is another parking lot for visitors. Do not park where there is an entrance or exit. These are roads that lead to private cottages.

Tilas stoll

Tilas Stoll is open to visitors all year round. Please note that it is forbidden to step outside the ramp inside the mine as there is a risk of falling through the floor, down the shaft. From the reserve's two parking lots, it is about 1 km to walk to Tilas stoll.

Welcome to the reserve!

Mine holes and earth balls

Högbergsfältet is an old mining field that was left to its fate after mining operations were shut down in 1906. Iron ore and some rare minerals were mined here. There are about 15 mine holes in the area. An exciting experience is to enter Tilas Stoll, a horizontal mine shaft. Be careful not to go off the ramp inside the mine - it can be dangerous.

You can also see the ruins and foundations of mining houses and traces of so-called earth balls - simple dwellings dug into slopes, with walls and floors made of earth. For the miners working in this area, conditions were very difficult. This led to the country's first mining strike, which took place here in 1869.

The reserve was established to preserve the mining and agricultural landscape with its well-preserved and rich cultural and historical background. The aim is also to preserve the scenic and varied natural areas with rich flora and fauna.

Meadow flowers and orchids

In the reserve there is a great variety of plants, which is largely due to the fact that the soil is calcareous. Here you can therefore find several species of orchids. One of the most beautiful orchids, the purple orchid, grows on roadsides and embankments. You can also find the rare little fern, the wallflower.

To preserve biodiversity, the land here is kept open by grazing sheep and by mowing. In the meadows of the reserve you can find plants such as brown clover, cuckoo pea, buttercup, cat's foot, black campion, red campion and meadow rattle.

Before your visit

There are picnic areas scattered throughout the reserve, including along the shores of Lake Yngen. The reserve has several hiking trails and paths that are largely wide with good surfaces. They take you through pastures, hay meadows, past mines and into the forest. In large parts of the area, you can get around with a stroller that can handle some off-road driving. For wheelchairs, it can be a little difficult to get around as there are some roots and steep sections. In the northern parts, the terrain is quite hilly and not as easily accessible. There is a dry toilet at the northern parking lot.

Parking is limited, and in good weather it can get crowded. Remember to park so that you do not restrict access for others. Also remember that you are not allowed to stay overnight if you are visiting Högbergsfältet with a caravan or motorhome.
