Butjärnskogen, Naturreservat
- Nature reserve
- County: Värmlands län
Actions
Description
Natural forest and vast marshes in a beautiful and undisturbed environment.
Butjärnsskogen is located in Norra Ny parish, an area known for its forests with many old pines. It is not for nothing that this is one of the country's strongest strongholds for the unusual beetle Raggbock.
The nature reserve consists of a mosaic of marshes, where wetlands give way to mainland islets with pine forests on thin moraine soils. Traces of fires are scattered throughout the area. In wetter areas, the presence of late-growing spruce becomes more noticeable. Throughout the area there are minor elements of older deciduous trees, mainly birch. Long forest continuity, little impact, etc. have resulted in a landscape where species such as capercaillie have such good conditions that the population can be considered stable.
The forests in Norra Ny parish are, from a county perspective, unique as the introduction of felling took place relatively late as the forest was long used mainly as a source of fodder for livestock. In the reserve, there are even visible traces of an ant farm that was established as late as after the Second World War, but which quickly proved unprofitable and was subsequently abandoned.
