Description

After the fire of 1893, which destroyed the entire shopping street (i.e. Kungsgatan), the street was widened and stone houses were built.

Architect Carl Österman designed Kungsgatan 31, which has clear horizontal moldings and was built on a solid pile foundation. The adjacent house in the corner, also called Kjellman's corner, was not built on piles and sank so much that the bottom step disappeared! That house had to be demolished, but A.G. Petersson's property is still standing today and is sometimes called "Tidningspelle's house" because the editorial office of the Kristinehamns newspaper was located here for a time.
