Description
It rattles when you step on the round stones at the old gravel pit in Sandviksåsen. It's as if someone has dropped their large collection of bullets here. But the bullets are only gray and decimeter-sized. The stones inside the ridge were ground smooth and round by the rushing glacial river that left behind the string of sand and gravel that we now call Uppsalaåsen. Sandviksåsen is a small part of this mighty pebble ridge. From the top of the gravel pit at the southern end, you can admire the view of Lake Mälaren.
The 5 km long hiking trail runs at the top of the ridge with steep slopes in both directions. From here you have a good overview of the surrounding landscape. No wonder our ancestors chose to build a castle up here. They also wanted to keep an eye on the situation, in case the enemy showed up. If you keep your eyes open, you can still see the remains of the castle up on the ridge.
At the northern end of the ridge, the path descends steeply and leads back along the water. Up on the ridge there is sparse coniferous forest, but down here there is more lushness and more deciduous trees. Dead trees lie criss-crossed on the slopes of the ridge. These have been deliberately left for the animals and plants that need dead trees to survive.
