Description

Väddö Canal is both of cultural and historical interest and has high natural values.

The first canal was built by order of Gustav Vasa in 1553. The canal you see today began to be dug in 1820 by 300 soldiers from various regiments. King Karl XIV Johan inaugurated the canal in 1840.

Around the canal there are deciduous forests with hazel, aspen and some broadleaf trees, as well as more open pastures. Here grow wood anemone, cornflower, cowslip and bluebells. Pike thrive in the canal.
