Description
Tyresö Church was built as a castle and burial church for the Oxenstierna family, who had Tyresö Castle built, but also as a church in the then newly formed parish. It was consecrated on March 9, 1641, and the first service held in the church was the builder Gabriel Oxenstierna's own funeral. Hardly any church has had such a celebrated consecration! The procession came all the way from the Old Town and among the 2,000 guests was the young Queen Kristina, then only 14 years old. The church is surrounded by a wall inscribed with the names of the farms that were part of the parish.
It is also home to the Stockholm Pilgrimage Centre in Tyresö, which organizes pilgrimages, masses and retreats.
