Description
Tjäderberget is one of Järfälla's highest mountains. On the top grows old pine forest with short crooked pines. This type of forest is called rocky pine forest. The pine tolerates drought well and can therefore grow on these dry lands. The trees grow slowly here and although they are small, some can be over 200 years old. They are still young compared to Sweden's oldest (known) pine, which is 760 years old.
Old pines have life even when they have died. Insects and fungi move in and ensure that the tree decomposes. The pines are also important for birds that feed on the insects.
In this type of forest, where there are not many people, the ground is often covered with gray-white mats of reindeer lichen. One of these lichens is called window lichen. Reindeer lichens grow very slowly, so they should not be picked unnecessarily.
The mountain's soft carpet of reindeer lichen used to be a popular spot for playful capercaillie. The capercaillie is a large forest bird that needs a lot of space in the forests to thrive.
Tjäderberget can be reached via the Upplandsleden trail or the five-kilometer loop that starts from Ängsjö track center.
