Description

Just a few hundred meters from Barkarby shopping area is an idyllic manor environment, namely Säby farm. The farm is a good place to start from for those who want to take a walk or bike ride in Västra Järvafältet's nature reserve, for example around Säbysjön.

North of the farm you have a magnificent view of the lake and the beach meadows. Picnic tables are available both by the road north and on the hill next to it, up towards the edge of the forest. There is also a barbecue area.

See and hear!

Järvafältets ornithological club has a bird feeding station here during the winter. If you sit very still at the bird feeder, you can see several birds up close, such as the blue tit, yellowhammer and great spotted woodpecker. Sometimes the sparrowhawk comes to visit, looking for the small birds.

The path down to the lake north of Säby farm is adapted for the visually impaired, who can follow a white strip. The trail leads down to the grasslands by the lake. There is a resting place here where you can listen to many different birds during the spring.

Fika on historic land

Säby farm is first mentioned in the early 1400s. The current main building dates from the 17th century. People have lived here since at least the Iron Age. Along a path just south of the farm there is a large runic carving from the 11th century in a rock.

There is a café in an old warehouse at Säby farm. The farm's stables from the 19th century are still in use. Järfälla Riders' Association runs a riding school here.

Bats and owls

Many of the lime trees in the avenue to Säby farm have hollows where birds, insects and bats can live. A pair of barn owls usually live in the avenue. In spring winter you can hear the male hoot at night.
