Description
A hammer forge was established on the Wättinge stream, as the rapids were first called, as early as the 16th century. In the course of time, a sawmill, powder mill, copper hammer, paper mill, weaving mill, rolling mill and mill followed. The name Nyfors was given to the rapids in the 1850s when the paper mill of the same name was established. Today we can only see some of the foundations of the operations and the area is a cultural-historical monument. The old manager's villa from the paper mill era remains, now privately owned.
The rapids are home to the rare common tern, which in some years succeeds in nesting by the river. The species feeds on bottom-dwelling insects, mainly the moth Hydropsyche siltalaim, the mayfly Baetis rhodani and various species of whirligigs.
