Description
Kalkberget is located on northeastern Mörkö and consists of an elongated ridge with fantastic views of the bay and the grazed beach meadows below. The flora and fauna in the area is unique here due to the high content of lime in the rock. Species that you normally only find on Öland and Gotland thrive here. In summer, the beautiful orchid St. Peter's keys bloom along with bloodwort, field wormwood and white buttercup. Many butterflies thrive in the flower-rich environment. If you are lucky, you can see the rare hazel dormouse warming itself in the sun in spring. At the north-eastern end of the mountain is an old abandoned limestone quarry that was used in the late 19th century.
From the parking lot, the red-marked "Kalkbrottstigen" trail leads you up and along the entire ridge towards the quarry and the water (1.3 km one way). At the limestone quarry there is a staircase that takes you down from the mountain and into the limestone quarry. Remember to be careful around the limestone quarry as there are very steep drops here. At the top of the mountain is a picnic table with seating - a perfect place for a picnic. Here you can enjoy a fantastic view of Egelsvik and Himmerfjärden. Perhaps the white-tailed eagle will grace your break by flying past.
