Description

Gåseborg must have the most beautiful view in Järfälla. From the top of the mountain you can see the bays and islands of Lake Mälaren. Combine that with the large ancient castle and the species-rich forest and we have one of the municipality's most spectacular excursion destinations.

Gåseborg is an impressive ancient castle. It was built during the Migration Period (400-550) and protected the population of Lake Mälaren against hostile attacks. Today, the courtyard offers a nice barbecue area with room for large picnic parties.

South of Gåseborg, on the slope down to the lake, grow interesting plants such as woundwort and witch hazel. The troll grape is inedible and therefore a grape that is only good for trolls. The woundwort was used in the past to make wounds heal together.

The rock here is rich in limestone, and the high humidity at the water's edge means that unusual mosses grow here. For example, you can find golden curl moss, rock fennel and rough baron moss here.

Traces of giants?

South of the ancient castle is Gåsberget, which offers a fine view of Lake Mälaren. If you continue 500 meters south along the mountain, you can find two half-meter wide giant pots. They are located about 50 meters up from the beach. Giant pits are deep pits in the rock that were created when the ice sheet melted away. In the past, they were thought to be pots used by the giants.

From both Gåseborg and Gåsberget, birdwatchers can see migratory birds passing by in spring and fall. The name Gåsberget probably refers to the geese that fly past. In the summer, you can look out over the water to see the osprey hunting for fish. The osprey is Sweden's third largest bird of prey.

The area around Gooseborg is a Natura 2000 area, which contains nature or species that are particularly worth protecting from a European perspective.

Lite långt att gå från parkeringen, men klart värt utsikten.
