HAMMARBY CHURCH The road to the source of life. If we, like Nils Holgersson, could see the landscape from a goose's back, we would see a grid of lines running north-south through the castle grounds above Stora Väsby Castle. These are the travel routes of different times. In the far west flows the Väsbyån river, where a Viking ship has been placed on two pillars at the height of the water level of the time at one of the bridges. Further east, the northern main line crosses the castle's baroque park, laid out in the 17th century, and on the other side of Charles de Geer's 18th-century castle, designed by Carl Hårleman, the highway crosses the old lime avenue. Then two stretches of the old Stockholm-Uppsala road break through the ridge. Finally, barely discernible, we can still see remnants of the ancient causeway that follows the southern shore of Lake Fysingen. There, on today's footpath below Stockholmsåsen, is a Trinity spring. The spring was once the reason for building Hammarby church a short distance away. Today, the 13th-century church is the only one in Stockholm County with a windowless north wall, a medieval building custom that symbolizes the power of Christ's love over darkness and evil. A Trinity spring flows to the north, and in folklore had a healing power. Seven sips were to be drunk from the spring on Trinity Eve, which falls seven days after Pentecost. Sit by the spring for a while. Drink from the clear water and think about what is the source of your life. "Here a spring flows, let it find her. She is deep and clear, hidden, but obvious.
