Wetlands - bogs, fens, shallow lakes and so on - were considered worthless in the 20th century and many of them were drained.

Wetlands are needed for the ecological balance. Because the gravel drains the ridge so well, there is no lake or stream here.

Along the way back to the orientation board you will see the pits of gravel pits, large and small.

In just twenty years, the edges have collapsed and vegetation has taken over the former open wounds in nature.
