Description

The route offers a varied natural experience close to the sea. Along much of the coast, pine forests grow on the lean and sandy soils. The pine forest is open and the ground is covered with thick mats of lichens and mosses. In the open areas, sandwort, heath flowers and thyme grow. [Äspets nature reserve (https://www.naturkartan.se/sv/skane-lan/aspet-vattenriket?guide_id=458) offers reeds, mixed forest, dunes and a sandy beach. The lagoon attracts nesting and resting birds. There is a bird tower with an overview of the lagoon and an outdoor museum that tells about life below the surface, lost ships and the Åla coast.

The central parts of the stage run through the coast's mighty dune landscape. The sand dunes of up to 20 meters have been formed over many centuries when the landscape was more open. In the south, the trail passes through the Gropahålets nature reserve. The stretch of coast between Åhus and Kivik is called the Ålakusten. Eel fishing has been an important source of income here. Fishing has given the coast its special character with eel sheds and drying racks for the eels.
