Description

Maskängen is a small hay meadow located south of Hardebergaspåret outside Lund. The meadow has a very rich flora with, among other things, maidenhair fern and meadowsweet. The land was cut off when the railroad was built between Lund and Harlösa over 100 years ago. The small meadow can be admired from the entrance road to Kungsmarkens nature reserve.

Flowery wet meadow

The small nature reserve slopes gently to the south and consists of wet meadows with a very rich flora. You will find, among other things, bride's-bread, summer violet, buttercups, maidenhair and meadowsweet.

In English

Welcome to Kungsmarken and Maskängen Nature Reserves

Kungsmarken and Maskängen are two botanical gems in the middle of the agricultural landscape of Skåne. Hundreds of years of grazing or cutting for hay, means that these two reserves are some of the most species-rich meadows in the country. A marked footpath takes you around the organically managed golf course and through the reserves safely.

The name Kungsmarken (King's land) probably comes from the Middle Ages when the selection of the monarch took place on the peaks west of Glomsbäcken. The Archbishop of Lund built a castle here, Glumstorp, in the Middle Ages. The remains of it can still be seen on the hill northwest of Lake Glomsjön. Iron Age burial sites and remains from old fields suggest however, that the area has been in use by man for much longer, perhaps for almost 2,500 years.

The many years of land use, along with the alternately wet and dry patches and the calcareous soils, means that many plants thrive here. There are more than 400 vascular plants found here including the rare beauties betony and fragrant orchid.
