Description

Silence, expanses and wilderness await at Fjällmossen. Sweden's southernmost bog takes you much further north. Here you'll find untouched moss fields with willow and cloudberry. Fjällmossen offers a landscape taken from northern Sweden. You walk through grazed pastures with groves, heather and a beautiful field of juniper. You may see elk, red deer or roe deer. The Mjöån river has its headwaters here on the bog.

In early summer, spruce spurge, haymaker and orchids bloom in the wetter parts of the pasture. In autumn, heather turns the ground purple. On the bog you can find cloudberries, crowberries and cranberries.

In spring, you can hear the calls of cranes and the strange play of snipe. From the old pastures, the green wren calls and the yellowhammer counts its typical seven-bill. In the winter, you can see golden eagles, barn owls and wolf birds flying over the wet expanses.

Peat for bedding and warmth

On Fjällmossen, human activity feels distant. Unlike many other raised bogs, peat has been mined on a limited scale. The surrounding farms have only collected peat for domestic use as bedding for the animals and for heating. Traces of peat pits and machinery remain in the area.
