Description

150-year-old juniper bushes and more than 150 million-year-old volcanic remains - yes, Anderstorp's juniper forest has both. A hiking trail takes you around the majestic junipers, but you can also roam freely in this pasture. The Äskekull peak is one of many basalt peaks in central Skåne, an old volcano. The black basalt volcanic stones are most easily seen in the stone wall at the top. From here you also have a nice view of Söderåsen. The Skåneleden trail runs through Eneskogen and there is parking here.

Volcanic past

Eneskogen in Anderstorp is located on a slope consisting mainly of gneiss but with elements of the volcanic rock diabase. The summit, Äskekull, also has a volcanic past. It consists of basalt, which is the lava that petrified in the crater mouth of a volcano that was active over 150 million years ago. You can see the black basalt stones in the stone wall along the dirt road. Look especially near the top stone which is close to the parking lot and sign in the open pasture at the top.

Old pasture with 150-year-old junipers

Anderstorp's juniper forest has long been a grazed outfield, an older form of pasture. The entire area is fossilized arable land with about 100 clearance cairns. Today's oldest junipers are thought to have grown in the 1850s. The largest juniper is 1.36 meters in circumference with a stem of one meter without branching.

Butterflies and flowers

The pasture is abundantly covered with 100s of enormously high pillars. Until recently, the tallest was over 15 meters. But there are also large, wide-crowned beech trees. The grasslands are well-kept and grazed with cattle.

The flora is fine in parts, with creeping thyme, spruce spirea, sedge, knotweed, bluebell, stonewort, foxglove and green-white night violet. The area is also in a region that is rich in butterflies. In the juniper forest, species with names such as the bush swift, meadow swift, aurora butterfly and silver-striped pearl butterfly fly. Even the garden sand bee and sobersand bee have been seen. Birds that can be seen in the pasture are yellowhammer, greenfinch, shrike, black-and-white flycatcher, goldfinch and greenfinch. Red Kites are seen flying over the area daily.

Outdoor life

The Skåneleden trail runs through Eneskogen. It enters from Söderåsen and Röstånga in the northwestern part of the reserve and continues towards Hallaröd Link to another website. and Höör in the southeast. In Anderstorps Eneskog there is a parking lot and a white-marked hiking trail. Rest area and fireplace are missing. Remember to take your rubbish home and show consideration for grazing animals. Be impressed by the large juniper trees and the fine view of Söderåsen. See the black basalt volcanic stones in the stone wall at the top. The juniper forest is flanked by two other "volcano reserves"; Jällabjär Link to another website. in the west (2 km) and Södra Hultarp Link to another website. - Allarps bjär Link to another website. in the southeast (5 km). Just a kilometer east of the reserve is Natthall. It is a cliff with an impressive view of Rönneå and its meandering (winding) course in the valley below.

In English

Welcome to Anderstorps eneskog Nature Reserve

On the slope of a 200-million-year-old volcano, lies a strange woodland with gigantic junipers and ancient beech trees - Anderstorp's Eneskog. The cows have been grazing here as long as we can remember and still do today. It is thanks to them that we can marvel at the ancient junipers and enjoy the wildflowers and butterflies in the pasture. The Skåneleden Trail passes through the reserve and leads you across this varied countryside.

Anderstorp's Eneskog provides an insight into what large parts of the landscape of central Skåne looked like 150 years ago. In this type of unimproved pasture, there are lots of small habitats with varying degrees of humidity, light, and nutrients. This is why many species can live in a relatively small area. On the higher, drier areas you can see breckland thyme, whilst the great butterfly orchid prefers the damper areas, and where it is wetter still, the unusual lousewort thrives.

Butterflies and bees thrive in the warm, sandy glades with flowering bushes and herbs. In the larger areas of blackthorn scrub you may see the unusual black hairstreak butterfly. Green woodpecker and yellowhammer thrive in this type of varied rural landscape. Both birds are residents, so you can see them all year round.
