Description
Medieval royal church, Sweden's oldest monastery and lively church village.
Vreta Abbey was founded as a Benedictine nunnery located in the current parish of Vreta Abbey in Östergötland. Today, a partially reconstructed ruin and the abbey church, Vreta Kloster's church, remain.
In the early 12th century, King Inge the Elder and his wife Helena donated the land at Vreta to a monastery, the first in Sweden. The monastery was only dissolved when the last nuns died in the 1580s. Today, the abbey church is surrounded by the ruins of the abbey building and the abbey house, which was the nuns' granary and which has now been renovated and is part of the church village visitor center.
A guide is on site during the summer.
There are also accessible toilets, parking and picnic tables.
